Today is National Kahlua Day. And in honor of that, I made these Kahlua Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars. If you are a Kahlua fan, then you’ll love these! When I made them this morning, I couldn’t stop licking the batter. 😀 You can definitely taste the Kahlua flavor in this and the dark chocolate is nice complement to this cookie bar. If you don’t have Kahlua or don’t want to add it to your batter, you can always add some coffee granules to this with some rum or vanilla extract. But really, why bother? Go all out and add the Kahlua. You’ll be glad you did. Bake some today and enjoy them with family, friends, or neighbors. They’ll thank you for it.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup of dark muscovado sugar
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup of sour cream
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup of Kahlua or other coffee liqueur
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of dark chocolate chips
Preparation:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9″ x 13″-inch baking pan.
Using a stand mixer (or mix by hand) beat butter, sugar and sour cream until creamy. Add eggs and Kahula until smooth. Add baking soda, and salt. Mix until blended. Slowly add flour until just moistened. Fold in chocolate chips.
Pour batter into the prepared pan and use a spatula to distribute the batter evenly. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the toothpick/cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the bars cool completely before cutting into the pan.

Love the idea of the dark muscovado sugar with the sour cream. Even though I don’t bake I can imagine certain flavours. Unfortunately not the Kahlua as I’ve never tried that before. if it’s rum based I probably wouldn’t like it. The coffee and vanilla I certainly would 🙂
Kahlua is not for everyone but I love all things coffee, even with rum in it.
I haven’t had Kahlua since my college days. We tried to come up with as many ways to mix Kahlua as we could, most of the time with devastatingly bad results. If we only tried baking with it, we could have saved ourselves a lot of headaches! Man these look good!
Hope your coworkers like Kahlua! These were tasty! I’ll be packing some for our neighbors and Lisa. 🙂
I kind of already guessed these were going to be a big hit at the office, but these were gone in about 5 minutes! I have received several requests to bring these back. 🙂
I will bring these back then. 😉
Oh my.., I want two!! These look delicious!! Dark chocolate chips and Kahlua sound so scrumptious right now!!
You’re so sweet, thanks Judy! 🙂
Looks wonderful – I like that you used dark chocolate chips!
Thank you so much! 🙂
I need a recipe to get rid of all the kahlua…these look like they hit the spot! Yum
Thank you and yay! 🙂 I hope you’ll enjoy this sweet treat as much as I have.

I haven’t seen Kahlua for so long. The cookie bars look really good, it’s coffee time here and I could just do with one now – dark chocolate and coffee is one of the best flavour combinations!
Thanks Sarah, I totally agree!

Reblogged this on Haute Mom Living and commented:
Love kahlua!
Thanks for the reblog!
I love coffee and chocolate combinations! I sometimes sneak coffee into chocolate recipes because my husband doesn’t like coffee but he loves dark chocolate . . . go figure. Those kahlua dark chocolate bars look sooooo good!!
Thanks Jan! I wouldn’t bother telling your husband there’s coffee in it if you were to bake these. 😉
My nephew hates mushrooms. I made a wild mushroom risotto one time and fed it to him. I told him it was pork and he believed it. hee hee..
What they don’t know won’t hurt them . . .
Sold! I love Kahlua and these bars look AWESOME!!! Pinning the recipe right now.
Thanks Claire! And thanks for your support. 🙂
It looks amazing. I wish I had a slice with my coffee right now.
Thanks Pam!
These look amazing! I had no idea it was Kahlua Day – guess I’ll have to head over to the pantry and add some to my coffee! 🙂
Just realized this was posted yesterday, but I think I’ll celebrate anyway!
Thanks Elise! Heck, I would bake these on any day. I have already gotten requests to bake these cookie bar again. 😉
These look delicious!! I agree with Pam. I’m having a cup of coffee right now and one of these Kahlua bars would make for a perfect morning. Will definitely be trying these. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Lisa!
I am lucky to work with Anne’s husband Chris and get the benefit of leftovers brought into our kitchen often. I just tried these and they were magnificent. So moist. Just a hint of kahlua flavor and the dark chocolate was perfect with it.
I will have to try to make these myself.
Thanks Karen! So glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
Oh my, I love Kahlua! Somehow, I miss all these National Days, Nutella, Margarita, and now Kahlua? Good it’s never too late to make some treats. Can’t wait to try this out.
Thank you Amy!
Oh my…..YUM!!!
For us coffee lovers! 😉
Kahlua for breakfast sounds good to me! I quite like the ingredients in your mix so rich and delicious, of course the breakfast of champions…..Take care, BAM

Thanks Karen! 🙂
Can’t believe I missed National Kahlua Day! Can I still make these anyway!
These were so good! I’ve already gotten requests to make them again. 🙂
Brilliant invention – kahlua is more go-to drink on Christmas Eve (for some reason don’t know why!)
Thanks! It really imparts a lovely flavor in these cookie bars.
Kahlua is new to me. How does it taste like? Your recipe looks so good.
Thanks Danny. It’s a coffee liqueur with rum. So if you like coffee flavor and dark chocolate, you’ll really like this cookie bar.
Yum! These sound amazing! 🙂
Thanks Nancy! 🙂
Great sounding recipe, but due to the cost I will be replacing the Muscovado with dark brown sugar. Sounds so good!
That would be totally fine –enjoy! And thanks for taking the time to stop by today.
I have made them a few days ago & they rocked my tastebuds: ooh yes!
Yay, so glad to hear Sophie!
sound so, so delicious!
Thank you so much!
These look great. I haven’t got any Kahlua but perhaps I’ll try them without of perhaps some freshly brewed coffee might be good.
Thanks! Yes, coffee would be a good substitute.
These look delish !! Gonna post this on Pinterest!! I’m not sure where you live but I know it’s not in the States ’cause we don’t usually cook with muscovado sugar, although I used to use it when we lived in Malta.
Ok, not only do those look awesome, but they also look way better than your average cookie AND way better than your average dessert bar… yummmm! I don’t actually keep Kahlua around, but I like the idea of using ground coffee instead. These photos just made me extremely hungry! 🙂
I’ve been dying to make these for my son! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
